The Amy Winehouse of Politics

December 22, 2008

After watching the trainwreck that is Sarah Palin, and continuing (much to my chagrin) to see her exploits and screwups keep popping up in the tabloids long after we all should have been done with her, I’m considering Palin to be the Amy Winehouse of politics.

The 20-year bubble

December 16, 2008

Great article here by the author of "Liar’s Poker".

I felt the same way about the tech industry, which is why I got out of marketing in 1999 and out of the whole industry in 2001. The waste, the corruption, the ridiculous rewards to shysters and scammers and the shitty treatment of people who did real actual work, was unsustainable, I thought. I didn’t realize it’d continue on for another 10 years, just as Mr. Lewis didn’t realize that the Wall Street bubble would continue on for 20.

Things that annoy me about Firefox 3

December 6, 2008

I set my screen colors to reverse, to save strain on my eyes. White text, black background, and no I do NOT allow sites to change them.

In Firefox 2 this worked great. I could see everything, except the occasional transparent GIF that had black text on a transparent background. But in Firefox 3, tons of elements in CSS are rendered with BLACK text on my black background. So, the “do not let pages choose their own colors” feature doesn’t seem to work so well in FF3.

The only way to see WTF is going on is to turn CSS off (with the Web Developer tools) and thus regain control of how my webpages are displayed.

Grr, hate hate hate.

Brain, brain, what is brain?

December 6, 2008

(Yes, the title is an old Star Trek reference)

OK, so I whacked my head a few weeks ago in a bicycle accident. I was wearing a helmet (which has a nice soft-spot in it now). But I couldn’t see for a minute or two afterwards, and had trouble focussing my eyes for almost a week afterwards.

And now I still have a headache that won’t quit. Riding a bus or MUNI makes it worse, for some reason. I really wish the headache would stop.

I’m putting this note here in case I suddenly drop dead or go into a coma or something. It’s unlikely, but it could happen; headache is a sign of high ICP, which can cause all kinds of evil permanent brain damage. Fun.

But I also whacked my ribs and hands in the same accident. My ribs hurt like fuck for a long time, and only now feel OK. My hand is still hurting some, but it’s coming back.

I know, see a doctor. What’s a doctor going to do other than charge me a lot of money I don’t have? I think I may still have medical insurance from my ex-wife’s company; I probably don’t though. I can get some universal coverage through the City of San Francisco now, I think.

There’s not much they can do for elevated ICP, AFAICT. At this point I think it’s just a headache, and it will go away just like 99% of concussion symptoms eventually do.
